Cheating Death

“Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
“Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”
1 Corinthians 15:54-55

I received a phone call at 3:49pm today from my son, who said, “Dad, we got in an accident.   Someone rear ended us really hard.”   It was a moment of panic.   The phone got passed back and forth and there was confusion.   My wife got on the phone and said our daughter was moaning because she hit her head really hard.
They were at the westbound I-90 onramp to the 405.   Soon an ambulance was there to take our daughter to Overlake Hospital.   I met them there.   She was wearing a neck brace, laid out on a stretcher.   It was kind of a scary sight.   She would be alright though.   Nothing broken, possible minor concussion, minor possibility of whiplash.   The person who hit them was talking on a cellphone and was still on the cellphone, panicking, after the accident.   This person hadn’t even had much chance to brake.
Given how fast the other car was traveling, it was a miracle none of them was hurt seriously.   The damage looked like the timing of the other car’s braking caused it to lurch downward just at the right time and go under our car’s bumper, absorbing shock into the ground and expending energy in lifting our car up—rather than a straight on collision.   Had this been a straight on collision at 35-40 mph, it’s likely that all three of them would have been seriously injured, or worse, today.
Two days ago, my wife said, considering how large cars are and how fast they move, it’s a miracle that there aren’t more serious accidents.   Her conclusion was that God must be preventing many of them.   Today, that is what we think happened.
We are in the process of moving to Japan this summer to start a new church in Tokyo.   There has been so much attack over this.   A friend mentioned the possibility of this being the explanation of the accident, especially as it happened just before a key meeting determining the outcome of the new church.   I...
