Thesis Statement

Thesis Statement

The thesis statement, also known as the introductory paragraph, is the most fundamental aspect of any composed essay. Within this opening paragraph, you are demonstrating to the reader a concise outline of the topic of discussion as well as the issues or ideas you wish you present in the body of your essay.

Before approaching the body of the essay, readers often create first impressions as to the quality and integrity of the essay by simply analysing the thesis statement. Readers, and certainly HSC markers, search for the attributes of:
* Originality
* Validity and angle of argument
* Sophisticated and appropriate use of vocabulary and
* Clarity in written expression

Fundamentally, in the composing of a thesis paragraph, you are not only proposing an argument or point of view, but briefly outlining the information you will be discussing in your essay with supportive quotes or textual references.

Here is an example of a WEAK thesis statement:
Q: "Genre abides by a set of rules known as conventions, which determine the path, style and inherent values present in a text. Are texts more appealing when they enlist to the conventions of their genre or when they deviate?"

A: The dictionary defines genre as a “…kind, type, esp. a style or category of painting, novel, film etc. characterised by a particular form or purpose.” The conventions of a particular genre are the implied rules which writers and directors follow, and which responder’s come to expect. These inherent forms or purposes are identified as conventions categorise a text into a particular genre/s. Texts can often involve the use of more than one genre, these minor genres become known as subgenres. They tend to create more depth and interest in texts.

As noticed above, the thesis does not address the question by providing a side of argument FOR or AGAINST the appeal of a text: the composer has not chosen whether to argue interest in conforming to or deviating...
