Childhood, it is not what you think.
A common misconception is that childhood is the state of being a child, but in reality if that was true many grown men would be experiencing their childhood simply because they are acting like little kids.   There is a word for the time a person spends in the age range considered a child and it is not childhood, but adolescence.   Men acting like kids are not experiencing childhood. That is a mid-life crisis.   No, childhood is not simply the state of being a child; it is the time when life seems simple, free and full of joy.
Childhood is not pain.   It is not challenging and it does not rip the heart out of its chest.   Perhaps there will be broken bones and skinned knees, but this is not the pain being spoken of here.   Physical pain heals and goes away in time.   The pain which causes childhood to vanish before anyone knows what happened is the emotional pain that cuts deep within the soul, embedding itself in such a way that all the time in the world cannot remove it, cannot heal the permanent scar hidden beneath the surface.   Childhood comes before the afore mentioned pain when life is full of happiness and young souls run free, not yet chained down with the heavy burden it is sure to find lurking beyond the door, waiting to strike.
Childhood begins at the moment of conception, but from there it changes for all people.   It lasts only as long as the world around a person allows.   For some this means not long at all, while for others it lasts a long time.   Everyone searches for childhood once it is gone, though most people never realize it.   Often times grown men act like little children in an attempt to regain it, but once it is past, childhood cannot be recreated.   Even I try to regain my childhood.   Looking at my life I can see that is true, but still I cannot give up trying to find this time when life seemed perfect.   Some days after my homework is finished I play a game or watch a movie when I know I should be washing...
