Conflict

“In times of conflict, ordinary people can act in extraordinary ways”
Expository piece - article
India Havers
In the late seventeenth century, the first groups of slaves were brought on a tremendous journey from their homeland to America. To the white Americans of the time, the slaves were little more than strong arms and sturdy backs. They were meant to work and generate money; they were certainly not to have a voice. Though many white Americans appreciated the slaves for their exertion, this appreciation typically did not overstep the bounds of their work relationship. Even after the slaves were freed, the tide of oppression did not pass immediately. Their newly decreed freedom could not command humanity for blacks in the eyes of whites. It did not give them a heart and soul. Blues music was cultivated for this purpose; to help the slaves cope with such adversity and to tame the conflict between whites and blacks.
The blues style of music originated in the work fields of the southern United States. In the nineteenth century, white Americans got their first taste of black music through blackface minstrel shows, which affected race relations in a positive and negative way. With the discovery and recording of blues in the twentieth century, this familiarity steadily intensified. Many historians assert that blues, the music created by blacks, vastly improved race relations in the United States since its recognition by whites. The music was a unique cultural offering that whites could not deny. It was something new and intriguing to whites that shed a new light on blacks and their place in American culture and society. It drew blacks to the same shows as it did whites. Stories tell of black musicians playing dances where a cord was used to divide the dance floor in half, one side for blacks and the other for whites. By the end of the evening, the cord would be on the floor and blacks and whites would be dancing together. They were not seeing color; they were...

Conflict

Below is a free essay on "Conflict" from AssignmentSolutionsSpot, your source for free research papers, essays, and term paper examples.

I am sitting here feeling the coldness of the seat beneath me. Watching the rain drops trickle down the train window. I pick up a news paper to find out what’s happening in Melbourne's news. The first thing to capture my tired eyes is how racism is becoming an almost daily occurrence on Melbourne transport. I look up and see many different races of people around me. They are normal. They aren't any different so why treat them any differently is the question I ponder. my mind. But what also goes through my mind is what if I was a witness   to such an   an incident. Would I betray those   who were being abused and simply sit thorough it quietly?   Or would I stand up and help them?   Unfortunately until I have been put into a situation as such I will never know. I would like to say I would do all I can to help but I never know.

I turn back to the newspaper and a title grabs by attention ‘Silence is betrayal’ I read with interest. It is interesting to see how differently each one of us reacts to conflict. There is no doubt that conflict is a common occurrence in every aspect of our lives; it is inevitable and unpreventable. It is capable of causing destruction and grief- as noted in S. A Jones’ article - but it can also be a catalyst for positive change. It is how we choose to behave in these times of conflict that define who we are and how we are viewed in society. vvConflict at times can bring about the best in some individuals enabling them to display surprising qualities and can also bring about the worst in people. Some people may show no reaction towards conflict and be absolutely unmoved by it.

The train driver’s voice wakes me out of my deep thought. I am surprised to see that I am nearly home. I slink back and once again my mind drift and I think about some of my reactions to the challenges that life has thrown at me. Of late I feel as if   I am constantly fighting with myself, especially as I am in the middle of studying for my VCE. This new person I’ve...

Conflict Is an Inescapable Part of Life

The first evidence that will be stated is as follows. Laurie Saunders published an article in "The Grapevine" as her first step to help stop the Wave. This article contained negative information about the Wave. On page 99 this is proved when it says, "She found Amy in the library and gave her a copy of the editorial to read. As Amy read, her mouth began to open wider and wider. Finally, she looked up at Laurie. What are you going to do with it? I'm publishing it in the paper, Laurie said. But you can't say these things about the Wave, Amy said. Why not? Laurie asked. They're true, Amy. The Wave has become an obsession with everyone. No one is thinking for themselves anymore." This quote from the book proves that Laurie has and will publish such a thing in "The Grapevine." Laurie takes this action despite of knowing that many people will hate her after that.

The second evidence is that Laurie convinced her boyfriend who is also one of the major Wave members, David Collins, that the Wave is dangerous. David was trying to convince Laurie that she was incorrect, but fortunately David himself was convinced. The evidence is found on page 112. "Hey, Laurie, can't you wait up? David asked". Laurie you've got to stop writing stuff against the Wave. You're causing all kinds of problems. The Wave is causing the problems, David. It is not, David insisted. Look Laurie, we want you with us, not against us. Overcome with anger, David grabbed her other arm. Why did she have to be so stubborn? Why couldn't she see how good the Wave could be? We can stop you and we will. He shouted at her. Almost out of control, he screamed SHUT UP and threw her down onto the grass. It was crazy. David knew that he was wrong. This proves that Laurie made David believe in her.

The third evidence is when Laurie makes Mr. Ross finally stop the Wave. Laurie Saunders and David Collins go to Mr. Ross and explained to him that his experiment is out of control. This is clearly done on page 118. "Who...
