This is the story of irreverent supernatural detective John Constantine, who has literally been to Hell and back. When Constantine teams up with skeptical policewoman Angela Dodson to solve the mysterious suicide of her twin sister, their investigation takes them through the world of demons and angels that exists just beneath the landscape of contemporary Los Angeles. Caught in a catastrophic series of otherworldly events, the two become inextricably involved and seek to find their own peace at whatever cost.
Gothic fiction, sometimes referred to as Gothic horror, is a genre or mode of literature that combines elements of both horror and romance. Gothicism's origin is attributed to English author Horace Walpole, with his 1764 novel The Castle of Otranto, subtitled "A Gothic Story". The effect of Gothic fiction feeds on a pleasing sort of terror, an extension of Romantic literary pleasures that were relatively new at the time of Walpole's novel. Enlightenment was not only a movement of illumination through reason but a movement of exposure, an effort to bring light to all the dark and secret places of European society. The Enlightenment's hostility to the church and its institutions, and to the ancien regime was fueled in part by this suspicion and fear of darkness. Gothicism emerged as opposed to the Enlightenment’s obsession with exposing, because if there is nothing lurking in the darkness then illumination and exposure are pointless: "Gothic novels develop a whole fantasy-world of stone walls, darkness, hideouts and dungeons which The Enlightenment constituted a new challenge of the Church. the enlightenment questioned Christianity as a whole.
