Animal Farm

English Draft
Introduction:
B: Throughout history, human beings have struggled with complications associated with the temptation of absolute power.
R: In George Orwell’s allegoric fable Animal Farm, he casts animals in recognisably human situations, and by doing so exposes the challenges of the ideals of equality.
P: It expresses its satirical meaning by using parody: the microcosm of Animal Farm as a representation of society, Boxer as a symbol of the vulnerability of the poor, and the dictator, Napoleon, as a representation of the corruption of the philosophy of animalism.

Orwell’s use of Boxer the horse is a central element by which the fable satirises the vulnerability of the poor. While he is an outstanding worker, Boxer does not possess great intelligence, which allows him to be easily influenced. In the opening chapter, the reader learns Boxer is “not of first rate intelligence”, but respected for his “tremendous powers of work.” This skill in the workforce universally wins the animal’s respect, but leaves Boxer without the intelligence to differentiate between hard work and exploitation. He lacks intellect towards anything except working, finding trouble learning the alphabet “past the letter D”. His response to life is simple, especially through the use of his two personal adages: “I will work harder” and “Napoleon is always right”. The pigs exploited his resilience to work beyond normal hours, wage and exhaustion. Their deeds may have been cunning and expedient in the short term, but ultimately Boxer is exploited to the point of collapse. Boxer is finally betrayed by Napoleon, who rather than waste money of medicine and health care, sends the old horse to “Alfred Simmonds, Horse Slaughterer and Glue Maker.”   Old Major’s words seem prophetic at this point: “Jones will sell you to the Knacker.” The vulnerability of Boxer was exploited not through Jones, but the inequality of Animalism.
