Richard Joel transformed the Hillel organization from an organization that was falling apart to a successful organization to support the Jewish college community and its leaders. Joel’s leadership qualities helped bring the leaders together in coalitions to strengthen the vision of Joel. Taking ideas from John P. Kotter (2007) Joel’s leadership skills were analyzed and compared to those that make effective change management qualities. Change lead to a successful new Hillel and Richard Joel emerged as a strong leader.
Hillel, a once prominent Jewish organization for college students found itself in a position of lacking membership and community support in the early 1980’s. Richard Joel a newly appointed director of the Hillel organization came in and updated the organizations way of doing things to help bring in new respect from the community, support from internal leadership and overall growth of membership for the organization. Joel’s style of leadership and change management skills was new to the Hillel organization and helped a once failing organization renew itself to regain its prominent standing in the community.
Coalition
The Hillel organization was used to doing things the way it had been since the 1920’s. When Joel took his leadership position, the first thing he did was come into the organization and meet with current Rabbi’s and leaders to gain an understanding of how the Hillel organization was ran. He did not talk about his ideas until he took the time to understand those who were already in charge running Hillel. Then once he took the time to understand the current leaders, Joel explained his ideas and vision for the new Hillel. Joel at that time formed a coalition with the current leadership of the organization by getting them on board with his thinking and vision. John P.
